On 2013’s Foreverly, Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong and solo star Norah Jones cover The Everly Brothers’ 1958 album Songs Our Daddy Taught Us. The original album showed the Everlys foregoing their rock ’n’ roll moves for the traditional folk and country tunes they’d been taught by their father, Ike Everly.

Norah Jones has ventured into country before, and although I thought "For the Good Times" with the Little Willies was only an average at best album, "Foreverly" is much, much better. Some are classifying this as folk, but the there is enough overlap with instruments like steel guitars, harmonica, and mandolins along with the way they have interpreted the songs I would call it classic country folk much more than I would call it straight folk or bluegrass

Covering the Everly Brothers - and this album in particular - is a curious thing, given that the brothers wrote none of these songs, and so the pressure is on Armstrong and Jones to breathe some new life into traditional country numbers. Padded out by bassist Tim Luntzel and drummer Dan Rieser in the studio, the ensemble decidedly does not.

November 25, 2013 5:00AM ET. Foreverly. Just when you thought Green Day‘s Billie Joe Armstrong couldn’t commit a worse punk heresy than doing a Broadway musical, boo-yah! Here’s a set of folk duets with the velvet-voiced Norah Jones. The year’s second fine left-field, all-Everly Brothers LP (see Bonnie Prince Billy and Dawn McCarthy’s What the Brothers Sang) remakes the 1958 Songs Our Daddy Taught Us LP with spot-on harmonies and playful retro arrangements. Tempos get oonched up here ( Barbara Allen ); electricity gets added there ( Long Time Gone ). But at its core, this is a faithful, touching re-creation

What a wonderful pressing! hearing every detail and warmth, two wonderful voices (Billie Joe from Green Day and Norah Jones) and great arrangements do justice. Definitely need to be heard on wax. Any vinyl mastered by Chris Bellman is a score!
