Various Artists - Psychedelic South African Rock 1968-1972 This real collectors item features 18 classic, rare and obscure tracks from the heydays of South African Psychedelic Rock. Album Title - Silver Trees & Totum The band Abstract Truth existed only for a very short time, but it was a time of super-creativity. They played a fusion of blues, folk, jazz and Eastern music and lifted South African pop of the early 70's from the syrupy blare of bubblegum music to new heights of progressive rock.
Although the South African rock movement of the late sixties and early seventies was not a major commercial success, its participants heralded an exciting new age in South African rock and started a movement aimed at chang. This collection brings together rarities from well-known artists like Abstract Truth, Suck, Otis Waygood, Freedom's Children, John and Philipa Cooper, McCully Workshop and Hawk, as well as lesser known acts like Buzzard, The Fireflies, The Idiots, Tidal Wave, and The Invaders. Although the South African rock movement of the late sixties and early seventies was not a major commercial success, its participants heralded an exciting new age in South African rock and started a movement aimed at changing the musical tastes of fans in a spectacular way.
Nuggets: Original Artyfacts from the First Psychedelic Era is a compilation album of American psychedelic and garage rock singles released in the mid-to-late 1960s. It was assembled by Lenny Kaye, who at the time was a writer and clerk at the Village Oldies record shop in New York. He would later become the lead guitarist for the Patti Smith Group. Kaye worked on Nuggets under the supervision of Jac Holzman, founder of Elektra Records.
Most of these albums are represented by the RetroFresh CD compilation, 'Astral Daze - Psychedelic South African Rock 1968-1972'. This CD, released in January 2006, covers the same classic rock period as the albums listed above. It features 18 classic, rare and obscure tracks (16 of which have never previously officially been released on CD before).
