The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia" is a Southern Gothic song, of the murder ballad type, written and composed in 1972 by songwriter Bobby Russell and sung by Vicki Lawrence, an American pop music singer, actress, author, and comedian. Lawrence's version, from her 1973 Bell Records album of the same name, was a number one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 after its release

Vicki went to the same studio two days later, on Wednesday, October 26, 1972 and over-dubbed all her lead vocal and harmony vocal tracks for the album. Vicki's voice was so good that she only needed one or two takes for each song to get the take her producer wanted. Vicki's entire vocal over-dub session took around 4 hours and the instrumental track session took about 7 hours of studio time according to BELL Records archive notes. That's the night that the lights went out in Georgia That's the night that they hung an innocent man Well, don't trust your soul to no back woods Southern lawyer 'Cause the judge in the town's got bloodstains on his hands. Well Andy got scared, and left the bar, Walking on home, 'cause he didn't live far. You see, Andy didn't have many friends, And he just lost him one.

Jennifur Sun from RamonaSussie, well the lights went out for him (he died) that title is just a medifore for something bad happening. Like I saw Red (did you really see the color or were you just really angry). and it costs him his life. He's in such a rage he's not thinking clear evidenced by the fact that when he sees Andy lying dead he shoots off the gun when he sees the Georgia State Patrol in the vicinity.

It’s amazing that Lawrence spent 11 years on a top-rated TV show, but most people I know would never peg Vicki Lawrence (or Mama ) as the singer of The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia. Perhaps that’s because it was the pre-MTV and YouTube eras and I had never seen video of Lawrence singing the song. Certainly I never saw her sing The Night the Lights Went Out in Georgia on an episode of the Carol Burnett show, and I think I saw nearly all of them through re-runs in the 1970s and early 1980s
