Joy Division were a post-punk band formed in 1976 in Salford, Greater Manchester, United Kingdom. Originally named Warsaw, the band consisted of Ian Curtis (vocals and occasional guitar), Bernard Sumner (guitar and keyboards), Peter Hook (bass guitar and backing vocals) and Stephen Morris (drums and percussion). The band dissolved in May 1980 after the suicide of its lead singer, Ian Curtis.
Joy Division (Factory, 1979)This was the first and only time that the band gave me something that they’d like for a cover. I went to see Rob Gretton, who managed them, and he gave me a folder of material, which contained the wave image from the Cambridge Encyclopedia of Astronomy. They gave me the title too but I didn’t hear the album. The wave pattern was so appropriate. It was from CP 1919, the first pulsar, so it’s likely that the graph emanated from Jodrell Bank, which is local to Manchester and Joy Division. And it’s both technical and sensual . Joy Division (Factory, 1980)Peter Saville: This cover for the band’s second album was like a work of antiquity, but inside is a vinyl album, so it’s a postmodern juxtaposition of a contemporary work housed in the antique. At first, I didn’t believe the photo was an actual tomb but it’s really in a cemetery in Genoa.
Unknown Pleasures is a perfect introduction to Joy Division. The first thing you hear is that ragged yet mechanical drumbeat and a few guitar and bass tones. And then this weird voice comes in, singing I’ve been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand. It’s like the start of a story . Some of the tracks near the end of the album seem to be leftovers from their punk days, and despite some vaguely interesting lyrics they don’t create a lot of atmosphere. The last track, I Remember Nothing, has a very cool breaking-glass loop used as percussion, but overstays its welcome by a few minutes. And I never need to hear the song Candidate again. Comparing a relationship to a political campaign is simply not an interesting theme for a song
Produced by Martin Hannett. This song first appeared on A Factory Sample, the first vinyl record released by Factory Records. It was also the last song played live by Joy Division at their Birmingham University show, just over two weeks before Ian Curtis’s death.
