Barry Humphries admirably fleshes out the life of his most famous comic creation - Dame Edna Everage from Moonee Ponds housewife to beaming megastar. Like on TV, Edna is an outrageously egotistical tyrant who we find out has bullied Madge Allsop since High School and even danced with her cultural compatriate Les Patterson at a teenage formal. Here you will see how Edna saved Barry Humphries stage debut and has had him under her solicitors thumbs for several years. For sharp Edna/Barry enthusiasts there are a few questionable moves Humphries has made in the book though - 1) He is cheeky in that.

Dame Edna wins over the Yanks & By David Leser An Australian institution, Dame Edna Everage, is the toast of the US, with her sell-out runs on Broadway and critics’ bouquets. Superstar housewife Dame Edna Everage has taken the US by storm on a hugely popular tour. Her alter-ego, Barry Humphries, has hidden behind the glasses and glitz for years, but here we enter the mind of Edna’s complex. Page 2 and 3: enver, Colorado, is the Queen of. Who is the real Barry Humphries? We know that his mother called him Sunny Sam. And that he's a scholar, an aesthete and a reformed alcoholic. Mrs Everage was not inspired by his mother but by the sort of housewife who gave a glutinous speech of welcome when the tired thespians arrived at her home town. Within months, this refeened, dowdy, timid figure was tentatively describing the amenities of her Moonee Ponds villa to delighted audiences at the New Theatre in Melbourne. All this while, Humphries lived as precariously and outrageously as Barry Mackenzie, the cartoon character he had invented who graced the pages of Private Eye in the 1960s and 1970s. At one point he and his wife and two daughters lived in a flat in Maida Vale. Later he was alone in a small private hotel in Westbourne Terrace.

Barry Humphries’s most infamous alter-ego is the flamboyant Dame Edna Everage whose signature catchphrase ‘Hello, Possums’ has become a part of the Australian vernacular. Although she is recognised by her lilac hair, gaudy glasses and extravagant costumes, Dame Edna was originally an average housewife (hence the name Everage) and her wardrobe lacked any glitz or glamour. Dame Edna was born on a commute in 1955 while Barry Humphries was on tour with the Union Theatre Repertory Company, which went on to become the Melbourne Theatre Company. Her falsetto voice was inspired by the Country Women’s.
