The Peel Sessions 1979–1981.

Killing Joke is the eleventh studio album by English rock band Killing Joke. It was released on 28 July 2003 by Zuma Recordings, making it their first album in seven years, following Democracy (1996). It is also their second self-titled album, following their first in 1980. Recording for the album took place at the Beauchamp Building in London in 2002. It marked the end of a six-year hiatus that began in 1996. Nirvana drummer and Foo Fighters frontman Dave Grohl, who is a long-time Killing Joke fan, performed drums on the album. It was produced by Gang of Four band member Andy Gill.

Killing Joke are an English post-punk band formed in October 1978 in Notting Hill, London, England; other sources report the band formed in early 1979. Missing lyrics by Killing Joke? Know any other songs by Killing Joke?

The first four John Peel Sessions plus bonus Richard Skinner Session. All tracks recorded for BBC Radio 1's John Peel Show at Maida Vale Studios with the exception of tracks 15-17 recorded for BBC Radio 1's Richard Skinner Show at Langham Studios.

The Peel Sessions 1979–1981 compilation collects the first four sessions the band Killing Joke did for the legendary BBC Radio 1 DJ John Peel plus a bonus session recorded for Richard Skinner's program. Songs have been previously circulating on bootlegs, but are presented here in pristine sound quality. Malicious Boogie" – 2:02. Tracks 1-4: Peel Session recorded on October 17, 1979.

The years covered are 1979 to 1981, so this isn't the usual career-spanning Peel comp, but it does follow the band as they evolve from a tribal post-punk unit that could have been signed to the esoteric Factory to an apocalyptic metal group that often landed in the pages of metal mag Kerrang!. Raw versions of the big, important numbers from the time - "Wardance," "Complication," "The Fall of Because," and "Tension" - are all here to illustrate the change

There's recordings from three Peel sessions from 1979 and 1981 and also a 1981 Richard Skinner session, so the CD covers the main songs from the group's first two albums. The quality of the recording is good but somewhat sterile in comparison with the other recent release "Duende - The Spanish Sessions". Although the tracks do differ from the album versions to a greater or lesser degree, they don't stand out as clearly as they might (or ought). If youre wavering between this and Spanish Sessions, I'd go for the latter to get the Joke in its real, raw up to the minute guise.
