Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes were an American R&B/Soul vocal group, one of the most popular Philadelphia soul groups of the 1970s. The group's repertoire included soul, R&B, doo-wop, and disco. Founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the middle of the 1950s as The Charlemagnes, the group is most noted for several hits on Gamble and Huff's Philadelphia International label between 1972 and 1976, although they performed and recorded until Melvin's death in 1997

Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes' first album without any involvement from Teddy Pendergrass and Philadelphia International Records is better than anticipated. David Ebbo sounds identical to Pendergrass and delivers some spirited leads on the skimpy eight-song LP. Ebbo excels on "Reaching For the World," an uplifting, song that sounds like a Gamble & Huff production  . 01. Reaching For The World (04:22) (Derek Floyd) 02. The recordings of Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes, along with those of the O'Jays, represent the artistic pinnacle of Gamble and Huff's legacy. Despite their 1970s success, however, a group whose musical focal point (Pendergrass) took second billing to its leader (Melvin) proved inherently unstable. Pendergrass left the Blue Notes to launch a solo career on Philadelphia International in 1976 and achieved brief status as a macho heartthrob before a tragic 1982 automobile accident left him paralyzed from the neck down  . amp; The Blue Notes SPLPH splph digs R&B Reaching For The World LP Vinyl Full Album.

Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes broke out nationally with their huge late 1972 hit, If You Don't Know Me By Now, but that breakout had been a long time coming. Harold Melvin had formed the group as the Charlemagne's in the doo-wop days of the 50's, renaming them the Blue Notes in 1954. At that time Melvin was the lead singer as well as the group leader. The album opens with the mellow hit single, Wake Up Everybody, a community-oriented song from their platinum selling album of the same name. The hits began to taper off. The liner notes say the label was giving the better material to the O'Jays, their biggest sellers.
